MANILA, Philippines—As rumors abound that he is on his way out of Meralco, Baser Amer remains on an even keel.
The point guard, whom Meralco selected with the seventh pick of the 2015 PBA Rookie Draft, focused on what he needed to improve on for the upcoming season even with reports coming out that the Bolts were set to ship him to TNT KaTropa as part of a three-team deal.
“Be a professional lang,” Amer said when asked how he responded to the trade rumors, which would have seen Bobby Ray Parks Jr. — the second overall pick in the 2018 draft — land at Meralco from Blackwater.
“Kasi kaming mga player, hindi namin control ang mga ganoong sitwasyon eh. Kaming mga players, naglalaro lang at sinusunod ang gusto ng coaches.”
Amer, who averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game in the Governors’ Cup, said he simply chose to stay positive amid whispers of a trade.
“Ang pagkakaalam ko, nasa Meralco ako ngayon,” the 26-year-old guard also said. “And sobrang excited ako sa mga darating na laro.”
There are no updates yet regarding the status of the trade, although Blackwater, the team that selected Parks, has stressed that it owns the rights to the rookie.
Meralco coach Norman Black also told ABS-CBN News that his team is “entering the season with Baser.”
“I don’t see that changing right now,” he added. “We’re looking forward to the combination of (rookie guard) Trevis (Jackson) and Baser to start the season.”
Meralco opens its All-Filipino campaign on Wednesday, January 16, against Phoenix.
