SC votes for spokesperson Marquez, 3 CA justices for SC justice post

MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court named three appellate court justices and Court Administrator Midas Marquez in their voting for their next colleague who will take the post of Associate Justice Noel Tijam who is due to retire in January.

Marquez, also named as SC spokesperson on Monday, said that the following names received votes from the tribunal’s internal voting earlier today:

  • Court of Appeals Associate Justice Manuel Barrios – 7 votes
  • CA Justice Ramon Bato – 6 votes
  • CA Justice Ramon Garcia – 6 votes
  • Marquez – 6 votes

The Judicial and Bar Council received 20 applications for the SC justice seat to be vacated by Tijam.

Tijam, President Rodrigo Duterte’s second appointee to the SC, will reach the retirement age of 70 on January 5 next year.

Marquez told reporters that the Judicial and Bar Council will only take into consideration the SC’s internal voting in deliberation on the applications.

“The JBC will only give due weight and consideration to the vote of the SC,” Marquez told reporters in the briefing.

Public interview on Wednesday

Meanwhile, the JBC will hold public interview on Wednesday on six SC justice aspirants.

Appellate court justices Ramon Cruz, Eduardo Peralta and Ricardo Rosario would face the panel in the morning.

Justice Bato, who received six votes from SC justice would face the public interview in the afternoon.

Joining him are Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang and anti-graft court justice Efren de la Cruz.

The 14 others vying for the SC post need not to go through public interviews as their interviews are deemed valid for a year.
