The ANC Brief: Election season kicks into gear

Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:

Political homecoming
The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) homecoming in an election year usually turns into a political affair. Classes with adopted classmates who are in power usually have some bragging rights. Members of these classes usually rise in the military and police hierarchy. But the PMA Alumni Association has barred adopted members of PMA classes who are running for public office from joining the annual homecoming parade this weekend. Many candidates are adopted class members. At least two PMA grads are running for national office.

Code white
The Health Department in Region 7 has declared a “code white” due to the measles outbreak. This means all hospitals in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor are required to set up emergency response teams, priority lanes, and isolation rooms for patients. The Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases will hold a health forum at 9 a.m.

Name changer
President Duterte’s statement that he might push to change the country’s name to “Maharlika” is still stirring debate online. The President will be in Nueva Ecija for a 4 p.m. event.

Bad influence
Inspired by the Philippines’ hard line stance on drugs, the Sri Lankan government is looking to hire hangmen. President Maithripala Sirisena, a recent visitor to the Philippines, said he wants to resume the imposition of capital punishment for drug traffickers. Sirisena also expressed admiration for the Philippines’ war on drugs. Meanwhile, a Makati court will hold the promulgation of drug charges against suspected members of the Sinaloa drug cartel at 8:30 a.m.

Moving forward
Life goes on for Budget Sec. Ben Diokno after tangling with Congress over the 2019 budget. He will hold his regular forum and will discuss the budget, procurement, and the agriculture sector performance.
